Mary, the new Netflix biblical movie that will tell the story of Jesus’ mother, is being slammed by activists due to the casting choice.

The Christmas film, which will arrive on the streaming platform on December 6, stars Israeli actress Noa Cohen in the lead role, while fellow Israeli Ido Tako will play Joseph. But since the trailer’s release, the film has become the target of criticism on social media due to its cast.

Director D.J. Caruso previously defended the casting of Israeli actors for these roles. “It was important for us that Mary, along with most of our lead cast, was selected from Israel to ensure authenticity,” he told Entertainment Weekly in October.

Several Palestinian activists are now slamming the cast and claiming the film is historically inaccurate because Mary and Joseph were actually “Palestinians.”

A post with over 1.6 million views on X (formerly Twitter) called the director’s decision to cast Israeli actors “diabolical” before calling for a boycott of the film.
